6301 Kirkwood Blvd SW, Cedar Rapids, IA

Just south of Hwy 30 in Cedar Rapids.​

See below for pre-requisites and reference materials.

Fees: $10 per half-day session/$20 for full day session*
*some classes have additional materials fee
Lunch: $8.00 per person (scout and adult)
*Lunch must be pre-ordered with registration on meritbadge.info. Due to pre-ordered catering,
meals are not available to purchase the day of the event.

Lunch includes: Hamburger or Hot Dog, Chips, Homemade Mac & Cheese, and Lemonade.

Kirkwood requests no sack lunches in the cafeteria. If you did not purchase a lunch ticket, please ask your scouts to eat outside or in the parking lot.  This is due to Kirkwood catering requirements.  
Remember - Leave No Trace.
If you go off campus for lunch, please be respectful of the 1pm start time for the afternoon session.

  • Scouts MUST be in Class A Uniform, read their merit badge booklets and be prepared.  
  • Some classes request that scouts bring a printed copy of the merit badge worksheet (see pre-requisites below).
  • Scouts with disabilities are encouraged to have an adult accompany them in class.  Instructors are unable to provide 1:1 instruction in this environment.
  • Siblings and non-registered youth are not allowed in the classroom.  
  • Field trips have limited space for transportation.  If adults want to attend, please contact [email protected] in advance or to volunteer to drive.

Scouts must bring bicycle in working order, helmet, water bottle and copy of BSA health form Part A/B to the class.  Scouts without a health form will not be allowed to ride.  Adults who wish to ride should bring the same.

Morning session will cover #1-6

Weather permitting: Afternoon will cover #7a (all parts) and #7b one ride of 10 miles

Scouts should bring the recommended gear and equipment (see What to Bring to Class) 

**Be sure to have an extra tube.  Scouts will change tires and re-inflate, and this can occasionally result in a puncture or leak.  Your ride kit should contain at least one extra tube.

Bicycles/gear can be brought in at time of registration and stowed in the classroom until after opening ceremony.

Bring cash for snacks. Time permitting on the ride, the group will stop for ice cream/snacks.

Each troop is asked to provide an adult volunteer.  We need at least one adult in each session to provide two deep leadership and appreciate your help to make sure every class is covered.

·         If your scout’s first choice is not available, please sign up for their second choice.  Please keep checking back to see if spots open up!

·         Please note that by registering you are reserving a seat in the class.  The registration fee is non-refundable. 

·         The fee will not be refunded if the scout does not attend.  You may substitute a Scout as long as the merit badge does not change.

Directions to FirstFleet, Inc. (Truck Transportation MB)

Transportation will be arranged for the class and meeting location on campus will be provided in the registration packet. 

 

Driving directions are provided in the event an adult must drive to the location in case of a late arrival or need to pick up scout early.

Adult Volunteers

·         We are a small troop and need at least one adult in each session to provide 2-deep leadership

·         Once your troop has signed up, please send a list of adult volunteers to Pam at [email protected]

Fees

·         Each session is $10.00

·         Full day session is $20.00

·         Some merit badges have extra material fees.  See Meritbage.info for details.

·         Lunch is $8.00 and must be pre-paid. 

Meals

·         Lunch may be purchased by both scouts and adults.

·         Unused meal vouchers are non-refundable.

·         We regret we are unable to offer substitutions for the meal or accommodate special dietary requests.

Field Trips

·         All merit badges that have field trips will be on campus

·         Some merit badge sessions will be taking field trips.  We will need volunteers to help with transportation of scouts.  Contact [email protected] to volunteer.

Behavior

·         The Scout Oath, the Law, and the Outdoor Code shall be the guiding behavior for our workshop.  A Scout whose conduct is not consistent with the code will be directed to leave campus immediately. Adequate supervision must be provided by each participating unit. No refunds will be issued.

·         No siblings or non-registered youth will be allowed in classrooms!

·         Troops should provide adequate supervision for scouts who are not in a session and non-registered youth.

·         Troops should establish a meeting location for the troop and scouts should be directed to that location when not in a session.

·         Scouts who need assistance are welcome to bring an adult with them to class, but the scout is expected to demonstrate knowledge of the material and participate.

·         Scouts with behavioral concerns are encouraged to have an adult present in class.  Scouts who become disruptive may be asked to leave the class.

·         Please note that scouts will be photographed through-out the event.

·         Registration for the workshop constitutes consent.

·         Troops must carry and have available and ready to produce their BSA Health Forms in case of emergency.

·         Both scouts and adult leaders should have health forms.

Nearby Points of Interest

Kirkwood Community College has several nearby options for shopping, entertainment and food. 

·         For fast food options near campus, please refer to this map.

·         Shopping includes Westdale Mall area, Lindale Mall, NewBo market and restaurant district, Coral Ridge Mall and downtown Iowa City , home to the University of Iowa.

·         Nearby camping include Corp of Engineers Sandy Beach Campground and private campground Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca about 10 miles south of Kirkwood,  Linn County Parks – Squaw Creek and Morgan Creek in Cedar Rapids, Iowa State Park Lake MacBride near Solon, and Corp of Engineers Sugar Bottom and several other nearby campgrounds around the Reservoir (Corp of Engineer campgrounds may not be open yet in April).

·         Nearby hotels include The Hotel (on Kirkwood Campus), the AmericInn, Clarion, Fairfield Inn & Suites among others. 

·         Visit the Hawkeye Area Council Scout Shop, just minutes from Kirkwood, open 9:00am – 3:00pm on Saturday.  The scout shop will also have a table with popular items for sale near the cafeteria during the morning of the Merit Badge University.
