- Recognize how your scout best learns. Is virtual the best option?
- Is the scout able to conduct self-study, or will an adult/parent need to coach.
- It is very important that a parent/adult does not "help" the scout complete the work, only coaches. The scout must do all the reading, research and completion of the work.
- Select a program that has good reviews - research the merit badge counselor and their organization. A useful resource are Facebook Online/Virtual Merit Badge groups.
- Get approval from the Scoutmaster in advance to take this virtually.
- The Scoutmaster should "approve" of your desire to start the merit badge and the counselor you have selected prior to beginning your work.
- The Scoutmaster is a required approver for your bluecard/in ScoutBook for the merit badge.
- Is the counselor willing to talk to the scout or must all correspondence be by email? It is nice to have the option for a live discussion, especially if you have questions
- Do reviewer comments indicate the counselor is quick to reply?
- Does the material have multiple sources of information - digital learning aids, videos, hands on instruction provided over Zoom, etc?
- Is the fee reasonable (expect it to be similar to fees charged for in person - $5-$15 for half day, possibly more for full day or Eagle Required merit badges because of their scope.
- Study with a Buddy! Even virtual merit badges are more fun when you do it together.
