Class size: 10
Bicycle, helmet and any tools can be brought to the classroom prior to opening ceremony.
Adults are welcomed/encouraged to stay and help with the hands on bike maintenance and checklist.
REQUIRED TO BRING TO CLASS
- Scouts must bring a bicycle in working order that is appropriate fit and a bike helmet.
- Please clean the bike in advance (remove mud, grease, etc. from frame and tires).
- It is preferable to have a bike with tires that are quick release.
- If your bike requires a bolt/nut to be removed to take off the front tire, please bring the correct size wrenches. It is best to remove the tire once prior to class to make sure it is not seized and the scout can easily remove the tire.
- Spare tube the correct size for the bike. (Req #5 requires removing the tire and replacing/patching the tube and remounting. We will try to use the existing tube but sometimes tubes are punctured as scouts learn this skill or due to the age of the tube).
- Scouts do not need a printed copy of the worksheet, but will need to log Req 7 on their own after the workshop.
Optional to bring to class:
Instructors will have 1 or more of these tools but if a scout brings their own, they can complete the tasks faster:
- Bike pump with pressure gauge
- Tire levers
- Small rag (for cleaning grease from fingers when handling chain)
- Chain lube
Pre(Post)-Reqs:
- Scouts will complete required rides for Req 6 on their own. Scouts may choose Trail or Mountain Bike. Information on how to locate trails and track rides will be given in class.
- Scouts must provide evidence of their rides (ex: GPS tracking, photos) and the written portion of requirement 6 for sign off. Scouts may contact [email protected] for sign off. Scouts may also work with their local Merit Badge Counselor for final sign off.
